Alan has always had a strong interest in art and started to paint seriously in his forties taking up watercolour. Alan has now been painting for over 25 years in watercolours, oils, and acrylics. He paints in watercolour for simpler landscapes and seascapes and tries to make the most of the transparency and fluidity of the medium, and oils and acrylics for more complex subjects where the painting is best developed incrementally.

One of Alanís inspirations is the countryside, the sea and boats. Alan also paints urban scenes with people, especially places and compositions which inspire whilst out for the day or travelling both in the UK and abroad. Alan aims for a loose interpretation of his chosen subject, and tries to capture mood and atmosphere, using light, reflections, movement and colour. A successful painting, in his view, creates an emotional response from the viewer rather than pointing up any technical merit and the most successful paintings are often those done quickly, with spontaneity, while the motivation is fresh.

Alan is also a member of the North Weald Art Group, the Dorking Art Group, and Artists in the Public Service. He recently won a prize for best painting in show in the AiPS exhibition at the Menier Gallery in London.
Alan lives in Reigate, Surrey.
